Use your computer without a mouse

March 28, 2006

In what ends up to be a good guide to keyboard shortcuts, Chrono Tron has written up some tips, tricks and resources for using your machine without a mouse.

"Firstly, it’s not bad. Yup! For those who think that life without a mouse reminds you of the 80’s or MS Dos, I’ve got a message for you, it really isn’t that bad. Infact whatever you do with the mouse you can do without it and you can easily learn to use some really great keyboard shortcuts to make your work fast even with a mouse later."

Royale Theme For XP

March 25, 2006

                                       royale theme

Tired of the boring old Windows XP theme? Want something new? You can now make any Windows XP Home or Pro machine look like the Windows Media Center Edition’s glossy theme. (called “Royale”) Microsoft has created a small shell file extension. The download and installation files are only about 2mb. The theme may take up slightly more memory than the standard XP theme, but is probably un-noticeable. To install, download the .exe provided below and when it asks you where to install the files make sure “C:\WINDOWS” is selected. If you choose “C:\WINDOWS” the files will automatically be placed in the “Resources” Folder in you computer. To activate the theme just right-click on you desktop -> Properties -> Appearance -> Windows and Buttons -> select [Media Center Style]. Hit apply and wait a momment for the theme to fully load.

Browster search result preview plugin

broster

The software, created by San Francisco-based Browster, uses patented "pre-fetching" instant page rendering that serves up a copy of the Web page in milliseconds in a new window on top of the original search page.

Users can click on links and information in that new window and download data from that Web site. They can exit by moving the mouse back to the main search site or click on an icon in the new window for viewing the previous or next search item in the list of results.

Ajax word processing with ajaxWrite

ajaxWrite

Ajax word processor ajaxWrite tries to bring the look and feel of Microsoft Word to your browser.

"To keep the program lean, we left out some obscure advanced features; you’ll find the functions you use most often, right where you’d expect them to be. (We’re still working on the spell checker.) You can import and export documents in all popular formats, including documents with graphics. The save function lets you save your work to a drive on your computer. Also, since you run ajaxWrite from your web browser, it is platform independent and can therefore be used with any operating system."

With ajaxWrite you can save your document to your computer (no online storage yet) in Word, RTF, Text, and PDF formats. While ajaxWrite may not truly have all the functionality of Microsoft Word, it certainly has everything you need to take care of most simple word processing tasks. ajaxWrite doesn’t have the collaborative features of Writely, but it’s a great tool with a familiar interface, so there’s next to no learning curve. Requires Firefox 1.5 or higher.
