Kaspersky warns of cross-platform virus proof of concept

April 7, 2006

Kaspersky Labs is reporting a new proof-of-concept virus capable of infecting both Windows and Linux systems.

The cross-platform virus is relatively simple and appears to have a low impact, according to Kaspersky. Even so, it could be a sign that virus writers are beginning to research ways of writing new code capable of infecting multiple platforms, said Shane Coursen, senior technical consultant at Kaspersky.

The new virus, which Kaspersky calls Virus.Linux.Bi.a/Virus.Win32.Bi.a, is written in assembler and infects only those files in the current directory. “However, it is interesting in that it is capable of infecting the different file formats used by Linux and Windows,” Kaspersky said.

“It isn’t surprising that we are seeing a multiplatform virus,” given the growing popularity of Linux on enterprise desktops, Coursen said. “This is simply proof-of-concept code to show this kind of thing can be done.”

Court rejects Da Vinci copy claim

The Da Vinci Code author Dan Brown did not breach the copyright of an earlier book, London’s High dan brownCourt has ruled.

Michael Baigent and Richard Leigh, who wrote 1982 book The Holy Blood and the Holy Grail, sued Random House, publisher of both books.

Both books explore the theory that Jesus and Mary Magdalene had a child and the bloodline survives to this day.

Mr Baigent and Mr Leigh argued that Dan Brown copied their book’s "central theme".

But the judge, Mr Justice Peter Smith, said The Holy Blood and the Holy Grail did not have a central theme in the way its authors suggested.

"It was an artificial creation for the purposes of the litigation working back from the Da Vinci Code," he ruled.

Dan Brown did use the previous book to write certain parts of his thriller, the judge decided, but did not substantially copy their work.

Mr Brown said the verdict "shows that this claim was utterly without merit".

Lucent Sues Microsoft - No More 360s?

xbox 360

Lucent, a technology company, has filed a lawsuit against Microsoft and is demanding that the Big M pull all Xbox 360s from the market. The lawsuit, which was previously filed by Lucent against Microsoft, was ruled in favor of Microsoft, not on legal grounds, but because of a typographical error in Lucent’s patent papers. The presiding judge over the case advised Lucent to resubmit their lawsuit at a later date, with the error corrected.

Lucent claims that Microsoft has violated patent laws which have to do with the 360’s MPEG2 decoder. The decoder is used to facilitate certain video routines in the Xbox 360. The decoder, Lucent claims, is patented by them. The original patent was filed in 1993.

While it is highly unlikely for all 360s to be pulled from shelves, Lucent is using this threat to gain leverage to win their case — in court or out of court.

South Park: Cartoon Wars

In the latest episode of South Park Cartman convinces Kyle to join him on his quest to get the Family Guy “offensive cartoon” episode off the air. It turns out Cartman doesn’t care about the offensive episode, he just really, really, hates Family Guy, calling it poorly-written and accusing it of using interchangeable jokes, rather than jokes that actually have something to do with the plot. You can watch the snip below.
